Okay, we've talked about it in other forums, now time to talk about it in the proper forum!

It's the umpteenth annual Three Speed Tour around Lake Pepin on the Mississippi (MN/WI). It'll be happening on May 14-15 this year. I'm planning on going. I've been the last few times, and there are other forum members who have gone in the past and also are going this year.

It's loads of fun. Don't have a three speed? You've got four months to find one!

Okay, who's going?

Again I'm really torn on this. I would like to take part, but a lot like last year putting money into a three speed isn't a high priority with the amount of money I have to spend on bikes.

Here's a question for you or Chris or others that have participated in past Three-speed tours could answer. What's the general vibe when it comes to this gathering? Are they purists? Do they wish everyone was showing up with vintage English three-speeds? Are they accepting of any bike with a three speed hub....I mean something like Chris' Riv with a 3-speed wheel put on for just the event? Curious?

Any plans for a post three-speed tour tour this year?

Every year I have wanted to do this ride and every year something comes up--last year it was starting a new job, this year moving across the country (and in the opposite direction from Lake Pepin). Some day I'll make it.

This year will mark my fourth Lake Pepin Three Speed Tour.  I rode the first two on a 1974-ish Raleigh Twenty.  Last year was on my '76 Raleigh Tourist.  My general take of the tour is that it is a friendly gathering of folks who enjoy a leisurely ride in the Wisconsin/Minnesota countryside; sort of a party on two wheels.  I suppose the only mandate is to ride a bike with 3 (or 4) speed internally geared hub.  Also, it is a "no lycra" event and folks are encouraged to dress in a fashion after post WW2 England.  The Lake Pepin Three Speed Tour website goes into more detail.  If you don't have a 3 speed, I've been told one can borrow one from one of the tour organizers.  I think it would be fun if we had a "steel on wheels" group in attendance!

Steve's observations seem spot-on to me.  I participated the last two years, and I felt entirely welcomed by the others.  When I think of "purists" at the event, I think of those who seriously enjoy vintage bikes, dressing up, and playing along with the event traditions.  What I don't see at all from those who I characterized as "purists" was any hint of snobbery.  Even in my first time there, the event sort of felt like a reunion of friends I haven't met yet.  I don't think I'm going to make it this year (primarily due to the time/distance investment), but its going to be painful to miss out. If I suddenly found myself with some extra vacation days in the spring, I'd be looking to get up there again.

But Doug, you already have a British three speed! [biggrin]

And since you are going to ask, yep, people have done the Three Speed Tour with Bromptons.

And there is definitely other small wheeled bikes on the tour. Like this Moulton:

And of course, Graveldoc's awesome Twenty:

So come on down, Doug! And bring your Brompton.

And yes to everything Pondero and the Graveldoc said.

Unfortunately, no. As much fun as it was last year (well, the whole Graveldoc bailing due to illness wasn't fun), there was quite a bit of logistics involved. I ended up organizing two group tours last year, and don't think I want to do that again in 2016 (besides something more casual.) Also, in order for me to do it last year, I had to use up two weeks of vacation. Not only was that a big deal with work, it also meant I got to do only one other real tour last year. I'd like to do more touring in the NW this year, so I don't want to take anything more than about a week for Pepin this year.

But there's always 2017...

I am really hoping to go this year. Problem is, there is only one three speed in the family for the two of us and it's not a tandem. I'll probably have to plan a road trip to Minneapolis to try and score something from craigslist. Hopefully a DL-1 (I don't think I'd fit a 23 inch Sports), otherwise maybe I can find a big roadbike to convert. I'd better get on it. Times a tickin'.

Yeah, I'd keep an eye out for a DL-1, it should fit someone your height!

I'm going to have to move to the "no" column. I've got one or two N+1 purchases possibly coming up, making room in the budget for a three speed pretty much non existent (not that I've been able to find one).
I hope everyone who does go has a jolly good time.

I'm going to have to go to the "no" column as well. Due to finances and lack of time-off. It's tough to say that. It's a rare opportunity to meet up with some of my blogger/forum friends and take part in a very cool bicycling event.
