Dahon in Valkenburg.jpg

Had a rather impromptu overnight planned when I found out the Eroica Limburg was happening this past weekend, so I rode to a campsite in Valkenburg, NL where the event was being held. I got there a little later than I had hoped, and hadn't realized that the campground was on the valley ridge overlooking the castle ruins-- a tough climb on two little wheels, but the view was worth it. To boot, the tent sites had poles for hammocking, which was good because I didn't bring a tent.

Made some coffee in the Moka this time, and sipped it as the sun came up. Then it was a zippy ride down into the valley to see the event start! Not sure if anyone here has been to an Eroica event, but it's a retrogrouch's Disneyland. I took a lot of photos so I'll have stuff on the blog and a Flickr album up shortly. Cheers!

Looks like you were well immersed in bicycle goodness, Jake!  Anxious to see your other photos (though did see your Instagram post)!

P.S.  Though I've never attended an 'Eroica type of event, I've watch the video L'Eroica Gaiole in Chianti a number of times and imagine what fun that must be!

Just perfect!

Camping, coffee, and coincidental 'Eroica.  I love bicycle outing accounts like this.  I know you guys are out there doing inspirational things, but actually seeing the documentation of your adventurous spirit is what gives me the gumption to overcome daily routine and get out there.

Bonus points for the Moka and the folder!  Well done!

Here's the blog write-up: http://www.bicyclistabroad.com/2016/07/eroica-limburg-2016-valkenburg-nl.html

Honestly, events like these are like jumping into the deep end of the pool. One minute you're in your own world with the bikes you own and the ideas in your own head, then all of a sudden there are a hundred other people with cool haircuts and awesome vintage bikes and everything is like magic. My coping strategy was to pretend that I was meant to be there, snapping photos like they were paying me to do it. I did get one Dutch guy ask for my business card, of which I have none, because I was wearing my Wheel & Globe tee shirt with the URL on the back. Fake it till you make it, they say. Anyway, all of this to say I want to do more of these and thank you guys for your interest.

Edit: the campgrounds were seriously awesome. Everyone was incredulous over my sleeping in a hammock...yet each site had hammock poles, so I don't see what was so strange about that. I guess hammock camping just hasn't caught on over here yet. They even allow winter camping, which is almost unheard of in Europe. Perfect for when they turn the caves into Christmas markets.
